2 One spring in the course of doing research for this book, Don and I walked the nearby Chemin des Douaniers (old Customs officers’ path). It was early May and the path had not yet been weeded. The gorse, akin to Scotch Broom, was tall and in full bloom. Ivy, vine maple, juniper and grasses wove their branches through the gorse. Our jackets were covered with yellow pollen and dirt, and our eyes itched. By the time we exited the path two miles on, our eyes were swollen into slits. We sympathized mightily with Huet and Mainguy that day and from then on!
